The Organization

Marathon LS develops specialized surgical systems used in high-stakes clinical environments. Their products operate inside procedures where timing, sequencing, and reliability are critical. The Pacer system is part of that ecosystem — designed to integrate into the surgical workflow without introducing friction or uncertainty.

The Communication Problem

The challenge wasn’t that the product was difficult to believe in. It was that it was difficult to follow.

The Pacer system operates within a sequence of steps that most audiences — even technical ones — don’t fully visualize unless they are already familiar with the procedure. That creates a specific kind of communication gap.

Too much detail, and the explanation becomes inaccessible.

Too little, and the value disappears into abstraction.

Early materials leaned toward product description — features, components, capabilities — without fully anchoring those elements in the moment of use. The result was a piece of communication that required effort from the viewer to assemble the story themselves.

In a clinical context, that kind of friction matters. If the audience has to work to understand how something fits, they don’t trust it quickly enough to act on it.

The Thinking

The discovery process surfaced a shift in framing.

The Pacer system didn’t need to be explained as a product. It needed to be understood as part of a sequence.

That distinction matters. Products are described. Sequences are followed.

The strategic move was to structure the communication around the surgical moment itself — what’s happening, in what order, and where the system enters that flow. Every element of the explanation needed to map to a step the viewer could track.

This required stripping away language and structure that assumed prior knowledge, while preserving the technical accuracy required by the audience. The goal wasn’t simplification. It was orientation.

Once the sequence was clear, the product could be understood without additional effort.

The Work

A technical demonstration video built to mirror the real-world sequence of use.

The piece was structured step-by-step, aligning the visual progression with the procedural flow the system supports. Close-up footage and controlled pacing were used to maintain precision without overwhelming the viewer.

Voiceover and on-screen information were calibrated to guide attention without over-explaining — allowing the viewer to stay oriented as the sequence unfolds.

The final piece presents the Pacer system not as a collection of features, but as a tool functioning within a clearly understood moment.

The Signal

The success of the piece wasn’t measured by production quality. It was measured by whether the viewer could follow the system without needing additional explanation.

Internal stakeholders were able to use the video across contexts — not just as a demonstration asset, but as a way to align understanding across teams and audiences.

When a technical product can be shown once and understood consistently, the communication has done its job.
