The Organization
Visual Foot Care Technologies developed a diabetic foot assessment system for shoe fitters and healthcare providers working with diabetic patients. The stakes were not abstract: undetected foot complications in diabetic patients lead to ulcers, infections, and amputation. The protocols VFC developed — using tools like the DermaStat moisture reader, AcuSense monofilament, and VibraTip vibration sensor — could intercept that progression. But only if practitioners understood how to use them correctly and why each step mattered.
The Communication Problem
Clinical knowledge of this kind is notoriously difficult to transfer through written materials. The protocols involve judgment calls — how to randomize testing patterns so patients don't anticipate the touch, how to interpret readings in the context of a patient's full presentation, when a shoe choice is actually a prescription decision with life-or-death consequences downstream. A manual could describe the steps. Video could demonstrate the reasoning.
The challenge was making a series of training videos that felt clinically credible — authoritative enough that practitioners would trust the content and follow it — while remaining clear and accessible to shoe fitters who weren't physicians.
The Thinking
The decision to cast a real podiatrist as the primary on-camera expert rather than a professional actor was foundational. The content required someone who could speak with genuine clinical authority — explaining not just what to do but why, in language that reflected real medical reasoning. That credibility couldn't be performed. It had to be real.
A professional actress was cast as the patient model, providing the controlled, consistent performance needed to demonstrate the assessments accurately across multiple videos without variation.
The production design challenge was significant: a clinically credible environment had to be built from scratch across multiple shoot days in different locations. When the primary location changed mid-production, the team transported props and purchased vinyl flooring to recreate the exact visual environment — ensuring that a practitioner watching the full series would experience a coherent, consistent clinical world rather than a series of disconnected rooms.
Seven videos were completed in the final shoot day alone, requiring precise scheduling, a clear shot list, and a production rhythm that kept expert and talent performing at their best across a full day.
The Work
A series of medical training videos for Visual Foot Care Technologies, covering the complete diabetic foot assessment protocol: patient engagement, pressure assessment, moisture measurement, sensation testing, vibration testing, and therapeutic shoe selection. Shot across three production days in Rhode Island and Newton, Massachusetts. Designed for use in practitioner training programs nationally.
The Signal
The content in these videos is genuinely complex — a shoe fitter watching the shoe selection module is being asked to understand the relationship between foot arch type, midfoot stability, rocker sole geometry, and diabetic neuropathy well enough to make a prescription recommendation. That's not simple content to teach. The test of whether a training video series like this works is whether practitioners who watch it can actually do the job. VFC built their national training program around it.
